My Inspiration is the Fruit of the Meditation of My Mind and the Thought of My Soul.

Interview by Mike Ponin

STROY — author, composer

“My inspiration is the fruit of the meditation of my mind and the thought of my soul.“

STROYa started in the music world in the 2000s. As early as 2002, he organized himself and performed on stage in Guadeloupe. First with the release of his first single “Les gouvernements” with Black Conscious, then from 2006 in Bordeaux where he released 2 self-produced albums: the album Recherche la Lumière and Live in Bordeaux.

The event that marked me the most was the presentation of my album in 2009 “Recherche la Lumière” at the Nasse de Vieux-Fort in Guadeloupe.

“There were people, good vibes, and especially a good harmony of the group that night.”

Since 2014, STROY has been working in collaboration with Jean-Marc Congré of MadJMC.

“I mainly compose with my guitar.”

My style varies between Roots, Nu Roots, acoustic music, and sometimes Dancehall. I write conscious Lyrics because music is a means to evoke the issues of this world.

A way to engage and show resistance against a system that I believe is oppressive and that for too long has never ceased to increase the gap between the rich and the poor. An unjust system that causes too much suffering cannot last, and I sing in the hope that it collapses to make way for a new World.

Guadeloupe…where it all begins.

Guadeloupe constantly influences me, both in terms of its history, its cultural richness, and its biodiversity, as well as its socio-economic issues. And the fact that it is an island dependent on France even today. The Guadeloupean himself, what he was in the past and what he is today inspires me as well. It is a people that I still find very resilient despite the very present traces related to slavery and colonization. It will take a long time for the scars of the past to fade from our behaviors and mentalities.

❤️ Heartist Afro-Caribbean Reggae

Living in the Caribbean basin fosters inspiration because the space and natural environment provide real conditions that allow me to write. The Caribbean is musically rich; we find many musical styles on the islands such as gwoka, Caribbean jazz, zouk, carnival music, reggae, salsa, African music, etc., which often fuse together, but the music I listen to daily is reggae.

The topic that matters most to me is our ability to turn our gaze towards Africa and highlight and practice our ancestral culture.

LET REGGAE PLAY / EP

“La montagne” is a flagship track of my musical activity and symbolizes my deep thoughts well. My ideas about the world, my spiritual conception are completely evoked in this song. It is the one that best conveys my message.

We also released with Roby from the La Centrale studio and MadJmc Music the Trap version of the single “Parfois.” This title has received a lot of positive feedback, so we are preparing the clip for the reggae version.
We are currently preparing a new album and I am currently recording in Guadeloupe the first single of a long series titled “Inna Jungle.”

_ In the age of social media, what changes for an independent artist like you?

The ability to inform, disseminate, and promote one’s musical activity daily and independently. Creating one’s own network and having more visibility. Social media is essential for me today and a valuable help as long as they complement radio appearances and live performances.

Black Conscious

Finally, I would like the group of musicians Black Conscious that we founded in 2002, very active for over a decade, to be operational again to quickly find the path back to the artistic stage.

I warmly greet all the readers of KRIBBEAN with the hope of seeing the work of unification between the bredween and sistween advance both in terms of musical projects and human relations.
