Caribbean Energy Takes over Nyc’s Nigerian Independence Day Parade

DJ Cheem, DJ Nfazo, Mickael Marabou and Suga Candy Mas Bring Caribbean Energy to Manhattan in a Vibrant Celebration of Music, Carnival and Diaspora Unity

Caribbean Energy Takes over Nyc’s Nigerian Independence Day Parade

The streets of Manhattan were painted green, white, and a vibrant splash of Caribbean color this past weekend. Barbadian soca breakout star DJ Cheem and fast-rising street favorite DJ NFazo brought their unmatched energy directly to the parade route for the 66th Annual New York City Nigerian Independence Day Parade on Saturday, October 3, 2026. Performing live on the move, these musical forces served as a powerful bridge between the West Indies and West Africa under the banner of a massive cultural crossover: Caribbean Meets Nigeria.

Organized by the Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN), the annual celebration kicked off at 2nd Avenue and East 54th Street before making its way down to Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza. The high-profile event drew massive crowds, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who joined the parade, praised Nigeria's deep-rooted influence on global culture, and joked that he showed up because he "didn't want any wahala!" While the main festival grounds hosted heavy-hitting Afrobeats sets from international giants like Patoranking, Runtown, and BNXN, the parade route itself was kept completely alive by the raw energy of the DJs, special guests, and a dazzling display of carnival culture.

Bringing major carnival vibes to the pavement, the award-winning Caribbean mas band Suga Candy Mas officially hit the road. The band provided a stunning lineup of carnival models who marched alongside the floats, infusing the parade route with pure sweetness, movement, and a celebration of collective diaspora freedom with their breathtaking feathers and gems.

The soundtrack to this breathtaking display of fashion and mas was anchored perfectly by the turntable heavyweights. Representing his unique Guyanese and Nigerian heritage, DJ NFazo made a highly anticipated special appearance, embodying the very spirit of the day's cross-cultural fusion. Proving exactly why he is one of the most talked-about upcoming DJs currently dominating the tristate college scene, DJ NFazo took over the route with a high-octane set packed with unrelenting Afrobeats and heavy street rhythms. Alongside him, "Ba Ba Ben" hitmaker DJ Cheem brought the distinct, fast-paced rhythm of Bajan soca-dancehall fusion, proving that the sonic ties between African drums and Caribbean soca are completely seamless.

The celebration on the road also saw stellar pull-ups from a few major New York hip-hop figures whose Nigerian lineages might surprise some casual fans. Rap stars Cleotrapa and ScarLip, who both share a proud Nigerian background, touched down to support the culture and bring extra street energy to the parade route.

Adding to the heavy display of Nigerian excellence, the route featured standout appearances from prominent Nigerian-American pro athletes. Five-time FIBA AfroBasket champion and practicing podiatric surgeon Dr. Sarah "Cheeks" Ogoke proudly repped alongside Nigerian professional basketball forward Lucy Ibeh. Their presence underscored the powerful intersection of sports, culture, and diaspora achievement.

Haitian artist Mickael Marabou also joined the celebration, embodying the spirit of cultural connection at the heart of the event. Describing herself as an artist and cultural bridge builder, Marabou highlighted the importance of bringing communities together, a fitting reflection of New York’s diversity and the growing connections between Caribbean and African cultures.

For global music platform Kribbean, this historic link-up highlights an exciting evolution in the global entertainment scene. As a DJ walking in both worlds, DJ NFazo perfectly showcased how the new generation is blending their roots alongside Caribbean institutions like Suga Candy Mas. The event wasn't just a celebration of Nigerian independence; it transformed into an anthem for Black unity and cultural exchange. Seeing thousands of college students, political leaders, athletes, and seasoned parade-goers alike waving global flags down 2nd Avenue proved that the movement of "One Love, One People, One Unity" is stronger than ever.
