“RESISTANCE WAS AT THE HEART OF THIS COMMEMORATION”

This event truly found its place during the weekend commemorating the abolition of slavery in Guadeloupe from May 25 to 27, 2018.

Set against a historically rich backdrop, at the foot of the Marches des Esclaves, near the port through which enslaved people arrived from Africa and close to an old slave prison, Le Festival Éritaj not only honored the memory of our ancestors through various performances but also raised significant questions about our existence.

Indeed, resistance was at the heart of this commemoration, particularly through debates and discussions focused on our current condition as Black men and women, descendants of enslaved people, still under European governance today.

WOTÈ MIZIK

Musically, it was a festival that built in intensity, featuring artists from all backgrounds on Saturday and Sunday nights, all engaged and full of conviction. Messages like “Sonjé pou vansé” and “A better tomorrow” were notably championed by artists Mano d’Ishango from the Karukera Crew and Jamaican Etana.

Esy Kennenga and rapper EDS. delivered an artistic blend that resonated with everyone. A musical journey combining two distinct styles, true to the theme of resistance in this fourth edition.

The uniqueness of these concerts is striking, as it represents a true “lyannaj”* among all these voices, all these souls, merging into one on stage. A beautiful energy radiated from it, keeping us captivated. The final concert was a stunning orchestration, crafted in just a week, offering an authentic spectacle so enjoyable that it could have lasted all night.

*Lyannaj: A word meaning “union, gathering.”

We surely finish this festival reenergized, ready to climb new mountains.
