If you’ve spent any time scrolling through your feed lately, you’ve probably stopped on Michelle Whitaker, better known to her collective digital community of over 203,000 Instagram followers and 142,000 TikTok followers as juustjewel. In a sea of hyper-edited, overly polite content creators, Michelle feels like that cousin who says exactly what everyone else is thinking but is too afraid to whisper out loud. Lately, that raw energy is moving way past phone screens. She kicked off the summer by locking down her very first official meet-and-greet in New York City. Put together alongside Kultured PR, the event completely packed out SAINT Resto-Lounge in Manhattan. The room was wall-to-wall people, proving that the tight-knit community she built online translates perfectly to real life. Riding high off that success, she rolled straight into Houston for DreamCon, connecting with even more of her fans in person.

We caught up with Michelle to talk about preserving her voice, her Belizean roots, and why she’s only just getting started.

Guarding the Unfiltered Voice

Staying completely authentic when the internet constantly tries to tone you down isn't easy. For Michelle, the biggest challenge isn't dealing with the algorithm; it’s dealing with the noise.

"The hardest part is not changing who I am just to please everyone," she says. "My humor comes from being myself, and I want people to laugh because it’s real, not because I’m trying to be someone I’m not. I know not everyone will get it, but that’s okay."

Laughter as a Tool for Healing

It's one thing to make people laugh at a quick joke; it's another to talk openly about life's actual struggles. Michelle balances both naturally because she sees them as two sides of the same coin.

"I truly feel life is a mix of both," she explains. "Sometimes you need a good laugh, and sometimes you need to know you’re not the only one going through something hard. I like being honest about my life because if my story can help someone heal while also making them smile, then I’ve done my job and I’m living in my purpose."

Roots, Rhythm, and Drums Not Guns

That sense of purpose runs deep, directly tying back to her Belizean-Caribbean identity. Michelle is a vocal supporter of the Belize African Connection and their local movement, "Drums Not Guns." It’s a cause that hits incredibly close to home.

"“Drums Not Guns” is a movement my dad started in Belize to help keep the yute off the streets," Michelle shares. "There aren’t a lot of after-school programs or activities for kids there, so he used his love for music to create a safe place where they could learn to play drums, build confidence, and stay out of trouble."

For her, the initiative isn't just a charitable talking point; it's her own blueprint. "I know firsthand how powerful that can be because drumming did the same for me. Learning to play drums in church gave me something to look forward to, kept me focused, and gave me a healthy way to express myself. Honestly, I don’t know where I’d be without it. When I play, I feel connected to the music and can let everything else go."

She sees a direct line between the rhythm of a drum and the timing of a punchline. "I believe art, whether it’s drumming, comedy, or any other creative outlet, can change lives because it gives people purpose, confidence, and a positive community."

What's Next for Juustjewel

With her first live events checked off her list, Michelle is keeping her foot firmly on the gas for the rest of the year. She’s expanding her brand into tangible pieces and diving into fresh industries.

"Right now I’m working on designing my new fall merch collection, which I’m really excited to release," she teases. "I also just completed my first brand partnership with Temu, and I’m looking forward to landing more brand deals, acting opportunities, and continuing to put myself out there."

If this year has shown anything, it's that her audience is ready for whatever she drops next. As Michelle puts it: "I’m just getting started, and I truly believe the world will catch on."
