Interview with Made in Mizik

Showcasing Martinique's Heritage is Our Greatest Achievement

INTERVIEW WITH

by Mike Ponin

With Gilles GUILON and David CHANTALOU as leaders, the group MADE IN MIZIK offers a true musical alchemy fueled by the experience and sensitivity of these two musicians.

MADE IN MIZIK — David Chantalou & Gilles Guillon

“THE PROMOTION OF MARTINICAN HERITAGE IS OUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT”

The greatest achievement of MADE IN MIZIK to date is having succeeded in finding a professional environment that allows us to highlight Martinican heritage and, more broadly, Antillo-Guyanese culture, enabling us to present ourselves to the hexagon.

“Our inspirations come from our respective backgrounds, primarily sources of Caribbean music, then an openness to the world.”

UNWAVERING DETERMINATION

If we had to listen to one song by MADE IN MIZIK, which one would you recommend and why?

The song Wotè comba’w for the simple reason that it is the first piece we composed in 2013.

We recommend it because its lyrics speak to determination and the courage to believe in tomorrow; it is still possible to build towards an ideal future.

We want to restore hope to a people scattered across the corners of the world in the face of an economy that has never been as catastrophic as our culture, and to unite everyone towards a better future.

A CHARMING PATRON

You have gained the support of J.P Marthely, a recognized artist from Kassav as your patron. Do you have any idea what attracted him to MADE IN MIZIK?

“The search for sounds and the group's investigation to represent a positive image of our roots, because at MADE IN MIZIK we have a secret recipe: Determination.”

NEW ALBUM

Listen HERE

This is your second album, and unlike the first, the second is supported by the AZTEC Musique label. What does this change for MADE IN MIZIK and your music?

For our music, of course, a superior logistics that allows us to better exploit our creations as authors, composers, and performers.

Made in Mizik now benefits from a professional environment suited to the context and environment of its music.

THE ZOUK

In your opinion, how is the Zouk genre doing, and what should be done to promote its radiance?

“The Zouk genre needs to return to the daily lives of the people.”

Its radiance will be the result of the work done by each person wanting to reclaim their culture, and this is where the approach of MADE IN MIZIK comes in, allowing new generations to discover a warm style that is eager to return to the forefront.

Every day we must connect, travel, and exchange with collaborators focused on how to bring the ZOUK phenomenon back to the forefront with those who have the potential to do so... Some stay, others leave, but encounters multiply as the days go by.

NOT TO BE MISSED!

The next step for MADE IN MIZIK is to conquer its audience now through organizing concerts, our only means of persuasion: “Music” in every corner of the Caribbean, extending to the hexagon...

After our opening act in the packed venue of La Cigale on October 31, 2016, we return to Paris for a CONCERT on December 16, 2017, as part of the Banlieues Tropicales festival at the legendary NEW MORNING venue, then in Martinique on January 27 at the T.O.M (Téyat Otonom Mawon) in Fort de France... and in May at the FESTIVAL DU MANS.

This is clearly our way of introducing ourselves to everyone for a first consultation :-)

IN 10 YEARS…

How do you see MADE IN MIZIK in 10 years?

😀 As a group that has traveled the world ten times over, but also one that has allowed an entire generation to be proud of its culture without compromise, like our predecessors who marked the ground from which we understood the message.

KASSAV’

“Our commitment is made; see you in 10 years if God grants us life.”

A big shoutout to the readers because through positive and realistic messages, vocations can be born…

Kudos to KRIBBEAN for the messages you convey, hoping to cross paths with you on our journey.

“It’s the audience that reigns! Let’s not forget that… Long live Music… Let’s not sector it!”
